Matt Small is British multi-disciplinary artist working with reclaimed urban objects and debris to create social narratives around the marginalised and the lost.

Since 2001 young, dispossessed people have been a common feature of Matt's work. With portraits labelled by only their name, his characters emerge through splashes of paint or assembled scrap metal to make us consider the relationship between people and place. Inspired by the social commentary of Jean-Michel Basquiat's reflections on race and class, Matt champions the anonymous youth, the mundane and the everyday, to subvert the prestige of traditional portraiture.
