The ‘luminescent float’ puzzle design for Vanguard explores two recurring strands within Felix’s work:
1. Abstraction of the central motif in graffiti, that is the name or word (in this case the name of the exhibition) in new and tangential directions. The ‘wild style’ aesthetic (the camouflaging of letterforms as complex interconnecting forms) disguises he word in ever more complicated ways. Felix undertakes a similar subterfuge, through a process of simplification and abstraction of letterforms.
2. The exploration of ‘colour as language’, and the synergy created by translucence where the energy of two (or more) colours collide to create a third where they meet and overlap.
‘Vanguard Float’ takes the word Vanguard and transforms it into an abstract explosion of colour and energy. Overlapping, translucent layers dance and jostle for attention.
During lockdown the artist found himself exploring new forms in his sketchbook, whilst jigsaw puzzles were simultaneously keeping his family occupied on the other side of the kitchen table. ‘Vanguard Float’ is the inevitable collision of the two.
